Ryland & Dean with some of their friends
Ryland & Dean with some of their friends.

On May 27, 1995 I married Dean Kidd. Friends warned him of my love for animals. He raised his eyebrow and, knowing my love for and involvement with quarterhorses, he said, "No hayburners!" So, with some persuasion, I talked him into one goat. Then I said, "This goat needs a companion," and he said, "Okay." How many goats do I have now? Too many to count!

In January 1997 Dean and I acquired another responsibility, raising my grandson, Ryland, who was six months old. When Ryland came to us he could not keep down any formula or cow's milk. My first doe was due to kid soon but I had no doe milking at the time. I bought canned goat's milk from the grocery store and he kept it down. The first doe freshened and Ryland grew like a weed and bloomed.

Dean grew up in the dairy industry, showing Guernseys and working in the family's milk transporting business, the first in the area. He respected my devotion to these dairy animals and the responsibility and sacrifice they require. There are few vacations unless the goats go with us. All the grandchildren claim all the goats which leads to an argument at times then I settle the argument by laughing and saying they are ALL MINE. Dean also loves the goats and now owns some of his own. The herdname was easy; DKIDD is named after both of us. Thank you to many Alpine breeders for their help over the years with the sale and or use of animals to assist me in reaching where I am at this time .

The herd has been Certified and Accredited since 1997.  All kids are removed at birth and raised on a CAE control program including heat-treated colostrum, pasteurized milk, separation from the adult herd and annual testing. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to learn a great deal about animal health care during the two years I worked for a local veterinarian. We enjoy showing the goats and participate in DHIR testing and Linear Appraisal.
